Bangkok, 12 October 2026 – The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB), led by Dr. Poj Aramwattananont, Chairman of JSCCIB and Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand; Mrs. Pimjai Leeissaranukul, Chairwoman of the Federation of Thai Industries; Dr. Yunyong Thaicharoen, Chief Economist and Sustainability Officer of Siam Commercial Bank Public Company Limited; and Dr. Phacharaphot Nuntramas, Executive Vice President and Chief Economist of Krung Thai Bank Public Company Limited, alongside other representatives of JSCCIB, held discussions with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and her delegation, with the participation of H.E. Ms. Kanitha Kungsawanich, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the WTO and WIPO, at The Athenee Hotel, Bangkok.

The exchange focused on the global trading environment and challenges facing Thai businesses, including trade policy uncertainty, non-tariff barriers, increasingly complex environmental and sustainability requirements, and geopolitical developments. Clear and predictable trade rules were highlighted as important for business planning, investment, and supply chain decisions, alongside the challenges SMEs face in accessing finance and competing in international markets.

Strengthening Thailand’s competitiveness was another priority, with attention given to regulatory reform, greater domestic value addition, innovation and technology development, AI adoption in manufacturing, and stronger SME capabilities. JSCCIB shared its key initiatives, including Reinvent Thailand and Zero Corruption, as well as its efforts to support Thailand’s OECD accession process through private sector engagement.

The WTO delegation emphasized the importance of an open, transparent, and rules-based multilateral trading system, together with ongoing WTO reform and efforts to address trade barriers. Other topics included services sector competitiveness, digital trade, SME access to finance, and opportunities for technical assistance from relevant organizations. The delegation introduced the WTO’s ePing platform, which helps businesses stay informed about proposed trade regulations and product standards. The meeting highlighted the value of continued dialogue between the Thai private sector and the WTO to strengthen Thailand’s competitiveness and participation in global trade.
